How does the Declaration of Independence apply to our current government?

As we celebrate our independence from an oppressive government, I think it would be a good idea to look at those original complaints and see how they apply to our situations today.

Here is the list of complaints outlined in the Declaration of Independence and my take on how they compare to today’s government.

He has refused his assent to laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

Our current Congress and President consistently ignore the Constitution of the United States. They passed a Health Care Bill that has no basis in the Constitution, there is no ability to intervene, yet they do. They took control in the GM bankruptcy, giving money to the union before the stockholders, ignoring the law. Then they ignore immigration law and give aid and comfort to enemies of the United States.

He has forbidden his governors to pass laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

Barack Obama is suing the state of Arizona for passing a law protecting it’s people from the foreign invaders.

He has refused to pass other laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of representation in the legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

They have manipulated the rules of the Senate to negate the representation of the American People, when they passed an unpopular Health Care Bill by using an improper procedure to skirt the filibuster.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

They consistently set votes at 1:00 AM and on Christmas Eve in hopes that Representatives will vote just to get it finished.

He has dissolved representative houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the legislative powers, incapable of annihilation, have returned to the people at large for their exercise; the state remaining in the meantime exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

While they don’t have the right to dissolve the state houses, this government is suing them to prevent them from protecting their people from the dangers without.

He has endeavored to prevent the population of these states; for that purpose obstructing the laws for naturalization of foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migration hither, and raising the conditions of new appropriations of lands.

Again, Barack Obama is suing Arizona obstructing the laws for naturalization of foreigners.

He has obstructed the administration of justice, by refusing his assent to laws for establishing judiciary powers.

He has consistently challenged the judicial branch. In his State of the Union address, he said, “…last week, the Supreme Court reversed a century of law that I believe will open the floodgates for special interests, including foreign corporations, to spend without limit in our elections.”

A statement that has been proven false, time and again.

He has made judges dependent on his will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

The Constitution prevents this, however, from the beginning; our government has sought to bend the judiciary to its will. FDR was the worst, but it has gone on since the colonial days.

He has erected a multitude of new offices, and sent hither swarms of officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance.

Czars anyone? How about the FCC? I can keep going.

He has kept among us, in times of peace, standing armies without the consent of our legislature.

We are so far beyond standing armies that this doesn’t really apply.

He has affected to render the military independent of and superior to civil power.

He has actually affected to render the military useless.

He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his assent to their acts of pretended legislation:

Our current administration has tried on several accounts to sign treaties that would impose restrictions on the American People that conflict with the guaranteed rights of the Constitution.

For quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:

No troop quartering yet.

For protecting them, by mock trial, from punishment for any murders which they should commit on the inhabitants of these states:

Haven’t done that yet.

For cutting off our trade with all parts of the world:

The government hasn’t cut off our trade, however, with the 2nd highest corporate tax rate in the world and signing trade agreements that allow foreign countries to flood our markets with cheap products, while imposing tariffs on our products that essentially prevent us from marketing in those countries, it has helped to destroy trade with other parts of the world.

For imposing taxes on us without our consent:

58% of the people opposed the Health Care Legislation.

For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of trial by jury:

Not yet.

For transporting us beyond seas to be tried for pretended offenses:

Haven’t sent us elsewhere to be tried yet.

For abolishing the free system of English laws in a neighboring province, establishing therein an arbitrary government, and enlarging its boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule in these colonies:

The closest thing to this is the Administration’s support of Mexico, the lawlessness there, and the complete disregard for securing our borders preventing that lawlessness from spilling over.

For taking away our charters, abolishing our most valuable laws, and altering fundamentally the forms of our governments:

This government, especially the last two administrations, has systematically tried to dismantle the Constitution and attain more power for the government. Specific examples include, the Patriot Act and the government takeover of our industries such as the auto industry and the banking industry.

For suspending our own legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

Barack Obama suing the State of Arizona telling them that immigration is best left to the federal authorities.

He has abdicated government here, by declaring us out of his protection and waging war against us.

I wish we had less government here.

He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burned our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

Well, the people of the Gulf Coast could make an argument about plundering our seas and ravaging our coasts, considering this administration ignored help requests from BP prior to the explosion, and has done everything in its power to prevent anyone from helping clean up the oil spill.

He is at this time transporting large armies of foreign mercenaries to complete the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of cruelty and perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the head of a civilized nation.

The only mercenaries that our government employ is Blackwater. They haven’t turned them on us yet.

He has constrained our fellow citizens taken captive on the high seas to bear arms against their country, to become the executioners of their friends and brethren, or to fall themselves by their hands.

Since we aren’t at war, this hasn’t been done since the Civil War.

He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavored to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian savages, whose known rule of warfare, is undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

Our current administration, while not exciting domestic insurrections, is doing little to prevent the Islamic terrorism that threatens our way of life.

In every stage of these oppressions we have petitioned for redress in the most humble terms: our repeated petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

We gather to express disdain; we are lied about in the press, accused of being racist, Nazis and a small minority. When we elect opposition, we are told that we support the actions. We are basically being ignored by those in our current government.

These are just the complaints outlined in the Declaration of Independence. Perhaps it is right on this of all days, to take a look at our current government and how it can be improved.

Happy Independence Day and God Bless America!

The Government isn't God!

I just read a headline on FoxNews that read “Can WhiteHouse Fix Mideast Deadlock?”

I have to say that I get so tired of these kind of headlines. How many things are we going to make the government take responsibility for fixing? This is an argument between Isreal and Palestine. The root of this fight goes back centuries.

Why do we thrust this kind of responsibility on our government? Aside from the fact that there are so many facets of our lives that should not include the government, by expecting it to “fix” things beyond its control is only setting it up to fail and disappoint.

The government isn’t God. It’s time the people of this country stop treating it that way.

ABOUT THE RECORDING SESSION:
My producer Frank Starchak and I have united
hundreds of musicians in the past recording songs to benefit
charities on three other occasions. I’ve loved the spiritual aspect
of these sessions, not in a religious sense, but in a cool and
wonderful sense. Imagine a purple haired rocker with a ring in his
nose singing a duet line with a southern gospel singer wearing a
business suit. Very cool. Very wonderful. Each session has been an
exhilarating experience for all of the participants. Non
professional singers are also welcome to come and join in the chorus.
It will be a great historical day. God bless.”

Is Bill Gates a racist?

Bill and Melinda Gates have decided that their scholarship is not open to white kids. On the website http://www.gmsp.org/ it says that students are eligible if they, “Are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian and Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American”

Ok. It’s their money, they can do with it what they choose. But it begs the question. How much hell would he be getting if he specifically omitted one of those on the list? What if his list read: Are Caucasian and left it at that? Would the same people be supporting him then? He would be crucified for being racist.

Well folks, it’s still racist. He’s basing his scholarship on race. Why is race an issue? Folks there are underprivileged kids of all races in this country and around the world. Why do we still have scholarships devoted to specific races?

I do want to make it clear, that 4 of the 6 scholarships (or 5 of 7 if you count the achievement scholarships separately) are available to people of all races. The question is, why differentiate? Dr. King said it very well. “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

I do not want minority children excluded. I want everyone included. Why are we still basing things on the color of the skin? Why do we have terms like African American, Hispanic American, White American? What happened to Americans? Why can we not embrace the line from the Declaration of Independence, “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.”

We have the son of a bi-racial couple, raised by his grandmother grow up to be President of the United States. We have had a man raised by a single mother in the poverty of Arkansas grow up to be President. This is a country of opportunity. That’s what we promise. We don’t promise that this is country of opportunity if you are of a specific race. Is there racism on both sides? Yes. Only a fool would say otherwise. However, they are the true minority. It’s time to put race aside and start treating people as Americans. So long as we continue to divide ourselves into groups, we will fail. Like a pair of legs. If they work together, they can run marathons. If they try to work separately, there’s just a lot of stumbling.

Our first President was George Washington. He was an intelligent, strong, brave, leader of men. He set the standard for President’s to come. The first Democrat to win the Presidency was Thomas Jefferson, one of the most brilliant men in the history of our nation. The first Republican to win the Presidency was Abraham Lincoln who led this country through a bloody civil war and kept it together. Our first Catholic President was John F. Kennedy, who inspired a generation to reach for the stars.

Now let’s look at some African-American firsts in our country’s history. The first African-American Federal Judge was William Henry Hastie a well-respected civil rights leader and accomplished leader. The first African-American Supreme Court Justice was Thurgood Marshall. Thurgood Marshall was a liberal and we disagreed on many things. That in no way lessens his accomplishments and his character. He was a strong man and a leader of men. He devoted his life to the pursuit of justice. His most famous case, Brown v. Board of Education still echoes through the schoolhouse hallways today. The first African-American Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of State was General Colin Powell. This is a man whose words inspired man, woman and child to hold their head high and take pride in their country. This man led the nation, regardless of the color of their skin, people believed in him and followed him.

Why the rambling down the road of history you ask? Because I’m now looking towards the end of the first year of the first African-American Presidency and I’m sad. History deserves better. The African-American Community deserves better. Our country deserves better. The first African-American President should have been a strong decisive leader like many of the African-American firsts before him. Instead, we got a sleazy Chicago Politician. That’s really what this Presidency is, that of a cheap Chicago Politician. He doesn’t really do anything, but when looking at his career, he never did. He just makes a lot of speeches and plays politics regardless of the damage to people or the country. I’m not convinced that he’s fighting for an agenda because he thinks it’s the right thing, but because he wants the win.

One of the big differences between Barack Obama and the other firsts of this nation is that there is no moral compass present. Other people who are first, usually fight and sacrifice to get there. That requires a moral compass to overcome the difficulties, because you know you are right. Barack Obama has overcome nothing and fought for nothing in his entire life. He’s a slick talking politician who has had his entire life handed to him and doesn’t understand the words sacrifice. Because he has earned nothing, he respects nothing. Unfortunately, that makes him the poster child for the latest generation, but it doesn’t make him the shining example that the first African-American President should be.

We got swindled. We got swindled out of what should have been a glorious moment in History. We got swindled by a generation of slackers who celebrate mediocrity and entitlement instead of meritocracy. I wanted to be able to look back on the first African-American President with pride. I wanted to be able to say that this was a brilliant man of character like the firsts before him. Unfortunately, that boat has sailed. For that, I am sad.

God, please bless the families of those we lost in this tragedy. Please bless these United States. May we never forget that freedom isn’t free, it is paid for in blood. Help us to honor their sacrifice and those of our soldiers.

Remind us of the people throughout our history who have laid down their lives to ensure freedom in this great land. Please remind us of this when we consider giving up those hard earned freedoms, just to take the easy way out. May you remind us that these heroes throughout our history didn’t take the easy way out.

Please let us remember that throughout our history, these people died so we could have the freedom to take responsibility for our own lives. Help us to celebrate that freedom, and give us the strength to stand against those who would attempt to deprive us of that. Thank you for your strength and the blessings you have bestowed on this nation.

Amen
